Not often are we presented with a realistic portrayal of love through film, yet DRAKE DOREMUS defies such a statement in effectively delivering an astonishing film centred on the complexities of long-distance relationships.
LIKE CRAZY focusses on the undeniable love between two young adults, Anna and Jacob. Doremus takes us on a journey into the inner depths of their relationship, without leaving out the realistically of such a connection. Conflict soon surfaces as Anna, a British citizen, overstays her American student visa and is disallowed entry back into the USA. Geographical separation materialises into conflict as both attempt to return to normality, while sustaining a long-distance romance. As time passes, both enter new relationships while still holding an explicit connection with each other. Breakups vanish and reappear, exposing the intricate truthfulness associated with love, and the obstacles one must overcome in order to satisfy another.
Both the leading and supporting cast are magnetic, as they lead the viewer into both the positive and negative aspects of love, while sustaining moments of extreme realism. Most of the film is improvised, allowing the viewer to actively relate to the characters’ predicaments. This is a rare technique to accomplish, yet it is dealt with impeccably through the film’s natural dialogue, coupled with its realistic context.
Doremus successfully delivers an impeccable film that will pull the heartstrings of even the most hard-nosed of people. The impeccable acting abilities of ANTON YELCHIN and FELICITY JONES, and the masterful directing of DRAKE DOREMUS encapsulate the makings of an outstanding film. Despite its low production budget, the result is priceless. Like Crazy is considered one of the best films of 2011 thanks to its corroboration to the realism genre — one which is unlikely to be associated with the “romance” genre — coupled with its outstanding plot and script-to-screen adaptation.
